Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a technique that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery, maintaining the circulation of blood and the oxygen content of the body. The PVC tubing runs through a mechanical pump that can be regulated to the proper cardiac output for a given patient. The CPB pump itself is often referred to as a heart–lung machine or "the pump". PURPOSE: Cardiopulmonary bypass is known to alter propofol pharmacokinetics in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Cardiopulmonary bypass is commonly used for heart surgery and to treat heart failure patients.
